João Ripper served as director of the Association of Photographic and Cinematographic Reporters of Rio de Janeiro, the Union of Journalists of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the National Federation of Journalists. He was coordinator of campaigns for mandatory credit in photography and copyright contracts and was responsible for creating and implementing minimum price tables. He is the founder and coordinator of the non-governmental organization “Imagens da Terra”, an entity that defends human rights, working mainly in photographic coverage of social conflicts (landlessness, indigenous people, slave labor, child labor, favelas, among others). Creator and founder of the Agência Escola de Fotologistas Populares Imagens do Povo, a project of the Observatório de Favelas. He currently works as a freelancer for the following organizations: Washington Post, New York Times, Le Mond, Herald Tribune, Nacla Magazine, Ford Foundation Magazine, Tempo e Presença Magazine, Novamérica´ Magazine, Senac Magazine, Educação Ambiental, Agencia Rapho, magazine Século, Marie Claire Magazine, Caros Amigos Magazine, Veja Magazine, Tudo Magazine, Domingo Magazine (Jornal do Brasil), Sem Fronteiras Magazine. For 13 years, he has been carrying out social documentation in indigenous communities in Mato Grosso do Sul, mainly among the Guarani-kaiowás. It documents slave and child labor, with a special focus on farms in the Amazon, mainly in the south of Pará, and child recovery projects, in addition to the activities of groups of professionals such as charcoal workers, crab farmers and shellfish gatherers.
