José Bassit takes a "humanitarian look" at the world. After spending many years in the world of journalism, having published several works in large-circulation newspapers and magazines, the Brazilian photographer opted for authorial photography.

Each of José Bassit's works seeks to "humanize the planet", bringing everything from a personal vision of São Paulo to the poetics of a dead leaf lying on the ground. The “Autumn” series, for example, brings together images of different types of dry leaves, a work that arose from his brief recovery trips after a delicate surgical operation.

His photographic fascination also includes everyday life, nature and traditional religious festivals, a theme that led to the publication of the book "Imagens Fiéis", in 2003. The photographer traveled to seven Brazilian states, between 1998 and 2003, portraying different popular religious manifestations.

Several works by José Bassit, an admirer of the work of Spanish photographer Cristina Garcia Rodero, are part of the collections of institutions such as the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the São Paulo Museum of Art.
